Harry Potter takes over the Giffins for Halloween

Posted by Peter & Candice on October 31, 2011

So I didn’t realize just how much our family was going to be recognized as the family who dresses up in a costume theme. That is until we were trick or treating in our neighborhood and I was stopped over and over by folks to confirm that “Yes, we are the family that dressed up as Star Wars last year,” and “Why yes, thank you, we appreciate how much you like our Harry Potter costumes this year.”

Yes, Miss Kate’s plans were again realized and 2011 was the year of Harry Potter. May I introduce the cast of characters:

We started at Microsoft to get the majority of the candy gathering out of the way and to have fun wandering around where it is warm and dry. Here are McGonagall, Dobby (as a free elf… the sock), and Harry ready to go.

Snape joined in later for the trick-or-treating at home and Jake really got his Dobby on once we were back at the house.

And now may I introduce Hagrid and Olympe joining Harry and Dobby — take that Voldemort! Keep your hands off Harry!

Snape showing off his love-hate relationship with Harry.

And then, when they just can’t fake it any more — Snape and Harry go after each other. Isn’t that always how it goes…

One of my favorite parts of the evening came towards the end when Auntie Leah was able to join us. She dressed up as our theme for 2012, testing things out to see how complicated it was going to get. May I introduce Butter Head Zombie from PvZ.

Pumpkin Carving 2011

Posted by Peter & Candice on October 23, 2011

Pumpkin carving this year was a slightly different affair, at least for Jacob and Pete as Jake’s pumpkin decoration went much more smoothly with power tools. I found adorable, Mr. Potato Head-like gear for Jake to decorate his pumpkin. At first Pete was trying to get the pieces in without assistance, but then he decided the drill was the way to go.

Jacob was so very proud of his Count Pumpkin-ula.

And thankful for Dad’s decorative assistance.

Speaking of boys and their pumpkins, Pete decided to decorate a pumpkin this year too. So after helping Jake, Pete moved on to realizing his own pumpkiny artistic stylings. Can you guess his direction or will you need to wait for the reveal later?

During all the pumpkin planning and execution outside, Kate and Auntie Tricia were quite focused on Kate’s creation indoors.

Kate is very detail oriented and Auntie Tricia was her perfect helper for all the fine motor work.

Finally, the product of all this hard work. Here are Tricia, Kate, and Jake reacting to the kids’ terrifying creations.

Now may I introduce Pete’s masterpiece — the Death Pumpkin.  Can you feel the disturbance in the force as millions of pumpkin seeds cry out?

And here are Kate and Dad’s works of art lit up side by side.

Show Me Your Moves

Posted by Peter & Candice on October 22, 2011

It is not unusual in our household to have a few diferent Xbox games of interest vying for TV time. But for the first time we have a game that Jacob is infatuated with called Once Upon a Monster (Sesame Street and Double Fine). Enjoy Jake and Kate dancing their hearts out with Elmo and Cookie Monster.

Crazy Hats at Target

Posted by Peter & Candice on October 12, 2011

A routine trip to the local Target turned into a photo shoot when we came across these absolutely adorable hats. Kate went panda while Jake was all over the penguin. I know I am biased but these two are pretty cute.

Testing Limits

Posted by Peter & Candice on October 9, 2011

Kate has already proven herself in the testing role on behalf of her father on his Windows Phone games (Pete’s motto is stolen but accurate “Kid tested. Mother approved.”). But she’s also continuously building out her skill set in engineering and limits testing. Case in point–this is how my girl plays Jenga.

Kate’s LEAP Day with Mom

Posted by Peter & Candice on October 7, 2011

2012 may be our next Leap Year, but LWSD has LEAP (Learning Enhancement Academic Planning) Days that are sprinkled throughout the school year. October 7 was one of those for Kate. She was originally scheduled to spend the day in extended care with the Y (our usual practice) but as I was driving to drop her off, she craftily observed that she would be perfectly content to spend the day with me in the office. Since I had no meetings and I adore spending time with my kids, I decided we’d give that a go.

Microsoft is very used to catering to employees with kids and they often hold fun Friday activities in our cafeteria space called the Commons. So not only did Kate spend the day hanging with me at work, but she got to have a little more fun than usual after lunch. Bouncy slide anyone?

The Beautiful South

Posted by Peter & Candice on October 1, 2011

Our trip started in Atlanta. We’ve already documented the Braves game in another post but we also visited the Georgia Aquarium and toured the downtown sights of Olympic Park and the CNN Center. Like Pigs on Parade in Seattle, Atlanta has Dolphins on Parade that tie in to the Georgia Aquarium. They are decorated by local business and can be found throughout downtown. The Aquarium is well known for its dolphins, beluga whales, and the otters.

Jen picked us up for the drive to Athens after our stay in Atlanta was over. On our way, we decided an introduction to the local creamery of note, Mayfield, was in order. This is no surprise to anyone who knows Candice as she is unable to turn down ice cream, especially on vacation. Here are Jen and Pete (otherwise known as Team Evil II) posing with the Mayfield Jersey cow.

After checking into our green Athens digs at Hotel Indigo we headed out to Terrapin, a local brewery, to sample one of Jen’s favorite stops for beer lovers. They have a lovely happy hour deal where you get a pint glass and 10 tasting tickets for $5. What a better way to spend a sunny afternoon. The best part of the deal though is the pink drink tickets. So manly!

Who cares though when you’re drinking good beer. Here are Jen, then Pete, then Candice and Pete enjoying the libations

After beer tasting and a scrumptious dinner, we turned in for night to rest up as Jen had to work a bit the next day and we had other plans. The next day started with coffee and juice, a quick photo-op with one of the UGA Bulldogs, and then our Athens and R.E.M. walking tour.

We met up with Jen later for the drive to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Jen & Jill had a big, southern hospitality themed weekend planned for us, starting with a home-cooked meal of lamb, green beans, salad, and grits. Pete was so hungry that he neglected to take a photo of the meal until after he’d consumed it.

Saturday morning we got up and went to the Dixie Classic Fair. We checked out the farm animals in the livestock barn, all the vegetables and gourds in the agriculture building, and all the flowers. We grabbed lunch (who can say no to BBQ pork?) and then decided to get some dessert. With all the interesting fair food around, Pete and Jen decided to go for some deep-fried Oreos. Candice and Jill were indignantly terrified and couldn’t bring themselves to try.

Speaking of interesting fair food…I can feel my arteries squeezing tighter as I recall looking at the Krispy Kreme hamburger. That is Candice and Jen on the left torn between the deep fried candy bars and the Krispy Kreme burger. ;)

After the fair we went for a road trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We stopped at a few places along the parkway to let the dogs out and run, and enjoy the beauty of the area.  We drove to the picturesque Mabry Mill which is a grist mill. This led to a lot of speculation as to what grist actually was. Apparently grist is grain that has been separated from its chaff in preparation for grinding.

We also toured a pair of winerys, Chateau Morrisette and Villa Appalachia Winery. Overheard during one of the tastings was this gem from Jen, “I’m really not very picky.” The Villa Appalachia makes wines from Italian grape varieties and the grounds and tasting room are reminiscent of an Italian villa.

Once we got back into Winston-Salem we hit up the local brew pub, Foothills Brewing. Pete had to get the sampler of course.

All we have left to say is a huge and heartfelt “Thank you!” to our spectacular hosts, Jen and Jill. We thoroughly enjoyed our Southern adventure and cannot wait until our next trip with you. Go San Diego in 2012!!
